I love this film, it's my favorite of Fassbinder's early noir/gangster trilogy that also includes Love is Colder Than Death and Gods of the Plague. I agree with Brandon that the ending is a stunner, extending its emotional excess for a truly uncomfortable length of time.

I've not seen this movie in like 3 years, but the ending, slo-mo--with a song sung by Gunther Kaufman??--sticks in my mind a great deal, it's emotional and then so long it's laborious,and then emotional again.

Fassbinder's recontextualization of the hardened noir type into a Vietnam vet is brilliant and understated. Also, the contrasts between American culture, be it pop culture (I recall a prominent Pinball machine, the comic books) or issues of race with Germany affected me in a way that Godard's similar plays with pop culture never did (or maybe weren't supposed to).
