I've become a big Preminger fan after revisiting a number of his films in the last couple of years (and I'm currently reading the new Foster Hirsch bio and looking forward to Chris Fujiwara's upcoming book). "Daisy Kenyon" is among his very best, and he certainly brought out the best in his cast (this has my favorite Dana Andrews performance - despite the fact that he supposedly didn't want to do the picture). And I can't say enough about David Hertz's adaptation, especially the amazing dialogue -- clever, direct, intelligent, occasionally ambiguous. Ha! I am so protective of her, which is ridiculous, but there you have it. I love that movie too. This makes me want to check in with Preminger's work and give it more than the sidelong, skeptical glance. (<I>Carmen Jones</I> is the only one I've seen on the big screen, and despite the black-and-brown spectacle, it feels as strained as Nancy Reagan appearing on Diff'rent Strokes.) You make Premiinger's democratic canvas and restraint sound a lot like a master's control.
