Hey, Brett: Thanks for the info. Of course I'm excited about a third cut. The expanding/contracting/revising confirms one of the qualities I admire most in Malick, his sense that a story is a living, changing thing, not fixed and dead, and that it's possible to express that not just through the editing of a particular cut of a movie, but through the very process of making/releasing/altering it.

I finally got "Hung Up on Grey Gardens" to work, and it's pretty hilarious. But why make another movie about the Beales when they've already had a perfect little documentary about their lives? Madge, for one, is not nearly S-T-A-U-N-C-H to imitate Little Edie.

At my last USA Film Festival in Dallas, I invited Todd Oldham to come back to Dallas and screen anything he wanted -- he close Dottie Gets Spanked and Grey Gardens. (And I hooked up my friend at Criterion with Oldham for the DVD, earning me a "Thanks" credit on it.)

I have a short clip reel that I've been screening at various readings and festivals, and there's always a certain segment of the audience that goes nuts when Little Edie pops up, talking about being "a staunch character."

Grey Gardens: The Musical opens soon on Broadway, with a book by Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife). Very curious to see how is plays.

Matt, it seems you're unfamiliar with the appeal of "Grey Gardens" within the gay community. I can't imagine any list of this kind without it. Alonso, did you see the "Hung Up"-"Grey Gardens" video that's been floating around the Internet these past few days (see below)? The smart gay boy who made it seems to have picked up on another Madonna appropriation. Apparently she wants to play Little Edie in a planned motion picture.
