LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.

Couldn't have asked for a better way to ring in the new year. Thanks, Matt and company. Here's to another decade of good cinema!

Awesome work Matt! Love the sound bridges and themeatic/visual groupings.

Needs some Yi Yi and Arnaud Desplechin movies. Other than that, lovely.

Yeah, both Richard and I have been beating ourselves up over not including this, that or the other thing. Not a day goes by that I don't think of something I should have put in there (today it was "Birth," thanks to Peet's mentioning it on his decade list). But we only had two parts to work with, and each one is under 15 minutes. We could have easily done 15 minutes for every year and still been kicking ourselves for everything we omitted.

Fun experiment, though.

You did include somebody playing Moonlight Sonata, so I guess Yi Yi's there in spirit.

What I really like about this and some of the other commentary-less video essays you've done (like "Following") is how you make disparate movies seem like part of the same collective expression. I can't articulate the connections between every one of these clips, but they all seem to flow organically from one another.

Great great video essay, MSZ. I'm sending to everyone I know...

Omissions for me (just for the fun of further list-making; not me being ungrateful): "Memento," "Half Nelson," one of the "Bourne" movies, Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight," "The Lives of Others," "Nine Queens," "Ocean's 11," "Collateral," "Lilya 4-Ever,"

For no other reason than sheer stubborn completism (a.k.a. Keith Uhlich's disease) I am thinking about separating these out into years and adding more movies to each section. Dunno when that'll happen, but keep an eye out.

I actually pulled clips from "Requiem for a Dream," "2046" "Lilya 4-Ever," "Together" and the Batman and Bourne films with the intention of working them into the mix, but for whatever reason they didn't seem to work rhythmically with the rest of the montage. My brother Richard, who edited most of Part 2, has his own list of stuff he did not include and wishes he had.
