David Thomson should delete his entire section on Mel Gibson from "A Biographical Dictionary of Film" and replace it with the last line of this trailer.

This might be a minority opinion, but Gibson really is an extraordinary visualist and director. Both Passion and Apocalyto were incredible visual experiences, and he really needs to get back behind the camera rather than in front of it.

It's a minority opinion shared by me. I think Gibson's an extraordinary artist. But because his subject matter tends to be mythological and unabashedly religious (remember that moment in "Apocalypto" where the hero's slain father feels his soul rising into the trees?), and because he's got a blue collar outlook on pretty much everything and a love of really corny or really low humor (sometimes both), he's not really taken seriously.

I think he's part John Ford, part Sam Peckinpah, with a touch of Mel Brooks. Nobody else like him. Even when he's terrible he's kind of amazing because he believes in every frame.

I'd love to see what he could do with "Moby Dick." Or "Frankenstein."

Mel is also going to star in a movie directed by Jodie Foster as a guy who walks around with a beaver puppet on his hand that he uses to talk. After the whole scandal I thought it would be the perfect kind of role for him to return in, so I'm a little dissapointed that this will be out first.

Reading this before watching the trailer I took Matt for being entirely tongue-in-cheek and was looking forward to some chuckleworthy tough-guy line. But the perfection of that really did draw a gasp.

A Gibson hero named Craven? The mind boggles.

Seeing this trailer, I think to myself:

Oh, hey, I've had a copy of the original EDGE OF DARKNESS lying around a couple of months, haven't I? I should watch that....

There is something about Gibson's last two films as director that made me pay attention, even if neither one holds up very well or is consistent in any way, shape or form.

This looks like one of those joke-trailers they have in movies.

Hell yeah. Long as Gibson doesn't play Ahab. I can just see him naked, arms spread, palms & feet nailed to the whale, angels singing as he sinks below the waves.

I'll only go see it if he calls Ray Winstone "sugar tits."

I will have to see this just to find out if they kept the scene with his daughter's vibrator. Plus, Ray Winstone. Unexpected and delightful co-star.
