1. News is flying all over the place about Terrence Malick's upcoming film, Tree of Life, which stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain and a bunch of dinosaurs, apparently. It's also three movies, according to Empire? And Ain't It Cool News says Douglas Trumbull is doing the special effects? Jeff Wells' Hollywood Elsewhere, of all places, has become a must-check site every day as the dude seems to have all the latest Malick scoop and links to stories about old, aborted Malick projects (including an LA magazine article excerpted below). The Playlist tries to make sense of it all. (Me, I'm thinking the purely dinosaurical IMAX extravaganza will become Malick's biggest box office hit, but I'm cynical like that.)
["'Imagine this surrealistic reptilian world,' says Richard Taylor, a special-effects consultant Malick hired. 'There is this creature, a Minotaur, sleeping in the water, and he dreams about the evolution of the universe, seeing the earth change from a sea of magma to the earliest vegetation, to the dinosaurs, and then to man. It would be this metaphorical story that moves you through time.'"]
2. Louis C.K.: "Starvation Can Be Character Building." Sure his bit on the Conan O'Brien show about how we take too much for granted has become a viral sensation, but this hilariously on-target interview with Vanity Fair gives good funny about the economic crisis.
["(Commercials) all try to remind you of how cool you are. 'You're so cool, you park your S.U.V. on a mountainside when you climb.' What? No, I don't do that at all. Nobody I know is doing that. 'You deserve the best cause you work so hard!' Actually, no, I don't work hard. I waste most of my time at work. Everybody does."]
3. New Film to Combine Sex and the City, Gross Russian Guys. Well, I mean, that just says it all, doesn't it?
["Surely all of this will make sense when we see the movie (which will probably be never), but how is it that all the characters in this New York-based movie are Russian? Sure, the men could be expats, but every woman they meet appears to be Russian, too. And these guys all own swanky Manhattan apartments. If they're such lovable losers, why are they living like exiled oligarchs?"]
4. The French Connection war continues, as Aaron Aradillas gets a hold of William Friedkin to respond to Owen Roizman. (h/t: Glenn Kenny)
["A conversation with Oscar-winning filmmaker William Friedkin."]
5. Foreclosure Rates Aren't Really That High. Well, sure, if you don't live in Nevada, California, Arizona or Florida, that is. (I'M suddenly glad I DIDN'T buy that little fixer-upper when I moved out here.)
["The median value of owner-occupied housing in 2007 was 8.3 times median family income, the authors found, while the 2007 national average was 3.2. Housing costs relative to incomes were especially high in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, 'where more than 20 percent of mortgage holders in each county were paying at least 50 percent of their income in housing related costs,' the authors wrote."]

Malick's 35mm film is The Tree of Life, and the IMAX film is The Voyage of Time. They are about the development of man and the development of the universe and compliment each other. The Voyage of Time was shot all over the world in 65mm. It's not just about dinosaurs, but everything.
It's the revived form of Q, basically. Malick continued to craft that screenplay through the 80s and 90s after it fell apart in '78.
I'm ridiculously excited.
Any scoop about who will do the dinosaurs' voiceovers as they wax philosophically about the beauty of their surroundings and their own impending demise?

Julia Roberts and Bono.
Todd, there's something evil about that Real-life Simpsons photo. Pure, evil. And it's somehow made worse by the fact that it isn't even the proper photo of the day.
No pleasant dreams tonight...
#1: The Trumball and dinosaur bits were news, but the second IMAX film was something I'd heard months ago.
Here, as it turns out.
James's link has apparently been edited, but it was being discussed at the Criterion forum, among other places.
#2: C.K.'s perhaps my favorite current stand-up artist, very artful at spiraling his rage to ever more outrageous effect; the artfulness of his presentation keeps the bile from spilling out of control. In addition to his crappiest generation generalizations, I wholeheartedly endorse his opinions of spousal handjobs, five-year-olds who won't put on their shoes, and deer.
I kinda stopped paying attention to much "in the works" news/hype a while ago so this week's Malick stuff is totally awesome to hear/read about. I can't imagine that we will be seeing two Malick films in one year. If it's handled well (HIRE ME AS ONE OF YOU BRANDING CONSULTANTS, PLEASE!), this could be as big as it should be...
Also, I agree, Rob: that shit is ill.
And, for good measure, that Louis CK spot is great.
The Homer is messed up enough, but I've always found the 'real-life' Mario infinitely more disturbing:
