Links for the Day (November 4th, 2008)

1. An Election Day film list from Michael Tully at Hammer to Nail. And from Adam Nagourney at the Times: "The ’08 Race: A Sea Change for Politics as We Know It."

["In the weeks, and especially days, leading up to one of the most historic elections in our nation’s history, it’s been hard to concentrate on cinema. Even for nerds like us. But we have a job to do here at H2N, so we banded together to make a list of our favorite politically-themed/motivated/charged movies when it comes to the good ol’ U S of A. If you haven’t seen these films, you should. And if you have your own suggestions, please add them to the comments section below."]

2. Marshall Fine gives us "A modest proposal (to end TV as we know it)."

["Create enough episodes for a single season. Cast them with the best actors you can. Pour the kind of production values into it that you would for a feature film. And then stop. Wrap it up with a satisfying conclusion in 13 or 22 episodes – or leave it open-ended and walk away. But leave it at that. Period. Brilliant. So brilliant it will never happen."]

3. "On Eve of Election, Obama Pays Tribute to Grandmother Who Died in Hawaii"

["“She was one of those quiet heroes that we have all across America,” Mr. Obama said. “They’re not famous. Their names are not in the newspapers, but each and every day they work hard. They aren’t seeking the limelight. All they try to do is just do the right thing. In this crowd there are a lot of quiet heroes like that.”"]

4. "Socialisme": GreenCine points us to Cinemasparagus where Craig Keller gathers some images from Godard's latest.

["What's different these days is that the bastards are sincere."]

5. A democratic display: vote in a fifth link, won't you?

***

Quote of the Day: Carl Schurz

"If you want to be free, there is but one way; it is to guarantee an equally full measure of liberty to all your neighbors. There is no other."

Antelope's sex signal in the knee

You can actually listen to the sound, which I think is just dandy.

Get out and vote today, everybody. Don't assume the rest of America's got it covered.

Sorely (and strangely) missing from that list of political films is Otto Preminger's Advise and Consent, arguably the best one of all.
