By Keith Uhlich
It's midway through the terrific second installment of David Simon and Ed Burns' adaptation of Evan Wright's Iraq War reportage, Generation Kill, that the Marines of First Recon Battalion note they'll soon be traveling in-between the Rivers Tigris and Euphrates—through the heart, in other words, of Mesopotamia, the "cradle of civilization."
It's an observation stated genuinely, nonchalantly, but still tinged with a potent sense, if only via the subconscious, of irony. The wellspring of life is now the battleground of death, though I don't think we're meant to take this as an entirely oppositional juxtaposition. Think back to the opening of Episode One where two Marines converse in a former Kuwaiti battlefield, littered with wreckage from the first Gulf War. The meaning of the image is clear: the location in question is as much its past as it is its present. The players have changed, as have the goals (currency prevails over historicity), but the precedents continue to haunt, even as each successive generation tries to brazenly reinvent the wheel.

Great write-up Keith. I too have been enjoying the show. One question: how many times do you view each episode? I feel like in my own write-ups on my blog I am missing a lot and not providing a lot of insight into the show; mostly because I only have time right now to view it once.
I am just as confussed as the characters sometimes. I state on my blog that I may be the only person in the world who is watching Generation Kill who hasn't seen a signle episdoe of The Wire.
I am gathering that David Simon's work is something that must be viewed multiple times.
I am really liking the in meidas res style of telivion Simon and Burns employ.
And you are spot on about how "currency prevails over historicity." Can't wait for the next epsidoe...oh...and Mad Men in one week.
Hey Kevin-
I have the entire miniseries on screener DVD, courtesy HBO. Save for the first episode, I watched the entire series all the way through before writing the review. Then I watch the episode in question again just before reviewing it. Will be doing Episode 3 tomorrow, I believe.
I do find Simon's work benefits from multiple views, as well as to be seen in full. The Wire gets even better once you know where it's going.
Yeah, I am already getting the sense of 'wait and see' with Generation Kill. Man, I really need to see The Wire.
