Links for the Day (December 19th, 2007)

1. Now on sale: the 2007 Film Freak Central Annual, available for purchase at Lulu, featuring several unpublished reviews and a foreword by Neil LaBute, a good sport considering how many times he's been Chawed over (see here and here).

["Now in its tenth year on the web, FILM FREAK CENTRAL returns to the world of print to assess the damage from the cinema of 2006: an uneasy melting pot of brutal folk tales, introspective superheroes, and bullet ballets. Featuring a foreword by director/playwright Neil LaBute, "The Film Freak Central 2007" Annual boasts critiques of over 215 recent releases, along with Top 10 Lists and 30 brand-new reviews that can't be found anywhere else--all capped off with a special movie-celebratory series from the staff of FilmFreakCentral.net (Bill Chambers, Walter Chaw, Travis Mackenzie Hoover, Alex Jackson, and Ian Pugh) to commemorate a decade of existence as one of the Internet's premier sources for intelligent and in-depth criticism."]

2. "Godard comes in many shapes and sizes": The inimitable David Bordwell on aspect ratios in Godard films.

["James Quandt started it."]

3. "Home porn gives industry the blues": Bringin' down the man with masturbation.

["Given the comparative lack of dialogue, pornographers and triple-X movie stars of the San Fernando Valley have been unaffected by the screenwriters' strike crippling Hollywood's movie industry. But that does not mean all is going smoothly. America's adult entertainment workers claim their $13bn industry is in trouble. Sales are down by as much as half as customers learn that what they once paid for can now be free. Pirated pornography is flooding the internet while thousands of 'amateurs' post their activities on websites such as YouPorn."]

4. "Cool Stuff: 30 Years of LucasFilm Christmas Cards": My Christmases with George. (Hattip to Movie City News.)

["I live down the street from LucasFilm, and I’ve even been in the facilities in The Presidio, but I’m not on the LucasFilm Holiday Card List. For the last 30 years, Lucasfilm has created special holiday greeting cards for its employees and business partners. This year’s card by Lorraine LeBer, photographed above, features three rows of die-cut pop-up Stormtroopers holding candles and songbooks. Click on the image to enlarge. But lets take a look at some of the cards from LucasFilm’s past:"]

5. "Jennifer! Jason! Leigh!": Nathaniel Rogers interviews.

["I require your patience and forgiveness. I really do. When one speaks to an actor of the caliber of Jennifer Jason Leigh, a woman long respected for rather shocking actorly dives into grueling often tortured women (think Tralala in Last Exit to Brooklyn or the disintegrating title diva in Georgia), one should probably begin with solemn acknowledgement of their skill with the craft. But when I spoke with the one and only Jennifer Jason Leigh I actually kicked things off with a sitcom aside. "So, um Jennifer. How did you feel about Jack McFarland taking your name in vain on Will & Grace all those years. (He had such a thing for the three name actresses)?""]

"Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is like expecting a bull not to attack you because you are a vegetarian."

"think Tralala in Last Exit to Brooklyn or the disintegrating title diva in Georgia"

Sigh. The "disintegrating title diva" is neither disintegrating, nor diva, nor played by JJL.

At the recent Denver International Film Festival, there was a panel on film bloggers. No locals were invited to participate, not even Walter Chaw.
