Links for the Day (October 20th, 2007)

1. "13 Ways of Looking": Ioannis Mookas on the films of Andy Warhol.

["Over the next four weekends the Museum of the Moving Image presents 36 films from among the hundreds made by Andy Warhol between 1963 and 1968. Warhol was copious, and the profusion of his work is mirrored by its many interpretations. Of the possible approaches, here's a baker's dozen:"]

2. "J.K. Rowling Outs Hogwarts Character": And I solemnly swear he's up to no good.

["Harry Potter fans, the rumors are true: Albus Dumbledore, master wizard and Headmaster of Hogwarts, is gay. J.K. Rowling, author of the mega-selling fantasy series that ended last summer, outed the beloved character Friday night while appearing before a full house at Carnegie Hall."]

***

3. "A Mock Columnist, Amok": Stephen Colbert ousts Maureen Dowd (somewhat) at the Grey Lady.

["Bad things are happening in countries you shouldn’t have to think about. It’s all George Bush’s fault, the vice president is Satan, and God is gay. There. Now I’ve written Frank Rich’s column too."]

4. "A Cinephilia": Girish Shambu on the origins of his movie love. And you? (Danke, Girish, for the House shout-out.)

["This week: casting a sentimental glance backwards, trying to retrace the footprints of my passage into cinephilia… Is it possible to identify a point in time, a moment, for such a passage or ‘conversion’? I can’t speak for anyone else—and I’d like to hear from you about this—but in my case, I think yes."]

5. "'Trek' film casts its Kirk and McCoy": And so the slash fiction begins...

["Chris Pine, who had been in talks to join the cast of J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" flick, will play the young James Kirk, while Karl Urban will take on the role of Dr. Leonard McCoy, distributor Paramount confirmed Thursday."]

Quote of the Day: Gerard Manley Hopkins

"'The child is father to the man.'/How can he be? The words are wild./Suck any sense from that who can:/'The child is father to the man.'/No; what the poet did write ran,/'The man is father to the child.'/'The child is father to the man!'/How can he be? The words are wild."

Dogs sure are dumb. Yes, all of them. I'm extrapolating to encompass the entire species. Dogs, on the whole, are dumb. Granted, I bet the Benny Hill soundtrack has something to do with aiding and abetting my assessment. But really: c'mon.

Now, if I could cast a spell somehow, and "cure" my allergies to cats, then I'd be pleased. And I'd have a stronger case against "man's dumbest friend." Honestly. _The Simpsons_ knows this. I know _The Simpsons_ knows this and I've hardly seen any episodes of _The Simpsons_ (compared to my friends).

I'd also like to say Gerard there is more than a little silly. As is this pronouncement about Dumbledore. (KU, I'm editing, I promise, however slowly.) But that post at Girish's blog sure is fun to read. Probably way more fun than this rant. Honestly. What am I doing here?

Hey, thanks, guys!

The close-up blog-a-thon has turned out to be the big beautiful mother of blog-a-thons! So much fun...

Keith, you unwittingly sparked that cinephilia post. I saw the Rochefort image in your post last weekend, which made me fire up that DVD (again), which led to the post. So, thank you!

How wonderful, Girish. Happy to have been the unknowing keeper of the flame, though perhaps we should both be thanking Jacques Demy for that. :-)
