Sembène was one of the masters. And was up till the end: Moolaade was as witty and perceptive and humane, as revelatory, as Black Girl had been 40 years before. Not because so few other voices were telling these stories--art is not about getting the news out first--but because of how magnificently he told them.

However progidious his influence on African filmmakers (and on the rest of the world in convincing them the continent was worth listening to), however deservedly their claim on him as first and foremost one of their own, Sembène was as idiosyncratic, as attuned to his surroundings, and as universal as any great artist.

Moolaade is the only Sembene flick I saw. It was very good. This sucks.

Always an interesting and memorable filmmaker. I hope more of his films will become available on DVD, especially Guelwaar.
