Links for the Day (May 5th, 2007)

1. "Queen Elizabeth reflects on ‘Jamestown legacy’": Where she met the strapping lad above. And see here for her post-ceremony thoughts.

["Celebrating the 400th anniversary of the founding of America's first English settlement, Queen Elizabeth II on Friday walked through a replica village as crowds lined her path to catch a glimpse of royalty."]

***

2. "Congestion Pricing--Bad for Film Production?": House contributor Annie Frisbie has a question -- discuss.

["Mayor Bloomberg's congestion pricing plan seems to me to be largely a good idea--good for the environment, good for pedestrian safety, and all that. But the costs for driving trucks into Manhattan is about to skyrocket, and those costs will need to be absorbed by productions."]

3. "Sixth-grader admits stabbing ducks with pencil": Take it, Daffy!

["A sixth-grader stabbed to death a mother duck and two ducklings that had nested near a school, distressing the other children and alarming officials who said the boy needs mental health treatment."]

***

4. "The view: In a New York state of mind": The House's Tribeca coverage gets a mention in the Guardian. Thanks Steven and Sheila for your hard work!

["Yet whatever its flaws, Tribeca certainly has no shortage of product. Indeed, such is the abundance of films that for me just glancing through its programme induced a giddy spell. So it's with a genuine respect that I tip my hat to those blogs willing to do battle with a seemingly numberless array of titles - chief among them Green Cine Daily, New York's own Reeler and the excellent House Next Door."]

5. "Dreadful directing dooms 'Disappearances'": From Seattle PI. Thanks to NP Thompson for the link.

["Kris Kristofferson took on the leading role of "Disappearances" because the script looked to him like "the Sam Peckinpah film that got away." Writer/director Jay Craven's third adaptation of a Howard Frank Mosher novel more closely resembles a project that M. Night Shyamalan might have thrown away."]

Clip of the Day: Ross Ruediger uncovers a little skeleton in Morgan Freeman's closet.

Keith -

You are evil (although honest) to credit me for this.

That said, this bit may be the meta-jewel in the SPIDER-MAN crown at this point.

(Raimi has dropped the ball by not finding ~something~ for Freeman to do in one of these movies[1].)

[1] Clearly the BATMAN guy has rectified this problem. Who is he again?

Thanks for the Electric Company flashback! I used to love that show.

As for Freeman: I'd rather play Blacula, and get webbed by my friendly neighborhood Spider Man, than drive Miss Daisy anywhere.

I'm heading out to see Spidey now. Will I be sorry?

#3: (From the Odie news wire) "According to news reports, the boy was heavily influenced by Donald Duck and rubber duckies. Both have now been banned, as has Duck a L'Orange and Mike White's Year of the Dog, because the dog in that film is named Pencil."
