For weeks now, my esteemed colleague Edward Copeland of Edward Copeland on Film has been soliciting ballots for his poll of the worst Best Picture Oscar winners of all time. Be a dear and help him out, won't you?
All you have to do is look through the list of Best Picture winners (Copeland helpfully provides one on his own web site; click here to see it) and then list the ten worst movies on that list, with 1 being the worst; then email your ballot to Mr. Copeland at eddiesworst@yahoo.com. You needn't have watched every Best Picture winner to vote; just assess what you've seen. Final deadline is midnight on Friday, March 31, after which point he'll begin tabulating the results.
You can read my ballot, followed by a whopping comments thread, by clicking here. Other posted ballots include:
* Self-Styled Siren, who picks "Going My Way" as the all-time worst: "A slobbery Great Dane cheek-lick to the Catholic clergy."
* Drifting Through the Grift awards the top slot to "Ordinary People," just because it beat "Raging Bull."
* The Reaction declares, "“Braveheart is the worst Best Picture winner of all time. Period.”

Thanks for the second plug, Matt. As of 5:30 p.m. CST on March 29, I've received 70 ballots and we are now down to a mere 8 best picture winners that haven't received a single vote against them. It's almost like Survivor. I wonder if any of the 78 winners can escape a negative vote before Friday's deadline. Also, feel free to include comments if you feel like it -- I'd like more of those to flesh out the post when I reveal the losers.
Cool. Come on, people, help my man Edward get over the 100 ballots mark. This contest has drawn a hell of a lot of attention from the industry, and the results are bound to be noticed as well, so make up a ballot and send it along to eddiesworst@yahoo.com.
Just because! Just because! Just kidding. Thanks for the link Matt.
No problem, grifdrift. Even though I love and defend that movie (as a sadomasochistic action picture, not a deep historical epic -- more ROAD WARRIOR than LAWRENCE OF ARABIA).
Attention from the industry?? It has? Where? how? from whom?
Please elaborate.
Copeland's item was cited in various blogs, including Green Cine Daily and the Hollywood Reporter. Since Ed started the poll, I've been getting regular emails from studio people and PR people who want to know which way the voting is going. They seem to be under the mistaken impression that it's my contest. It's actually Ed Copeland's.
PS -- Your screen name is amazing.
We have just the 100 ballot mark.
Holy cow! Congratulations, Edward, on an inspiring effort. I can't wait to read the results. Glad I don't have to tabulate them!
