On the horizon

By Matt Zoller Seitz

First off, apologies; this is the longest I've gone without a new post since opening The House Next Door on New Year's Day. But the subject is "The New World," so I've been taking my time with it. I expect to post a draft sometime today. I thank you for your patience, and I look forward to your comments.

Hi. Take your time! I almost sense a reluctance among critics to dig deeper into this movie, for some reason-most reviews are disappointingly short. But if any movie gets better (and more mysterious) with repeat viewings it's THE THIN RED LINE-and I think this movie will be like that too.

I saw the longer theatrical version twice, and the shorter one once, and I have to admit that on a purely cinematic pleasure level, I enjoyed the shorter one a lot more-it moved so well for me in terms of storytelling logic and stuff (why they're here, what X is trying to do to Y), I think the longer theatrical one was probably deliberately fudged a little in terms of storytelling. But I kind of missed the pacing of the first cut too-when I first saw it the movie really felt like a different world moving in a different speed.

And the amazing thing for me was that I could notice only 3 or 4 shots "actually cut out"-I mean everything seemed intact (but moved around a little) but the film felt quite different. It's amazing how Malick actually achieved this.

Yeah take your time, Matt. I haven't updated my own blog since my initial Bujalski post. But I'm going to go see The New World again today, so I'll look forward to talking about it on here whenever you're finished.
